Approved and Potential Uses of Diclofenac Sodium 1.5% Solution:

As an NSAID that’s partially selective for COX-2 but inhibits both COX-1 and COX-2, Diclofenac Sodium 1.5% decreases the formation of proinflammatory prostaglandins. It may further exert an anti-inflammatory effect by inhibiting chemotaxis and neutrophil aggregation or lowering levels of cytokines. Consider using it for the following conditions:

  • Osteoarthritis of the knee – Diclofenac Sodium 1.5% Solution has been approved for relieving osteoarthritis-associated pain and inflammation in the knees. However, Phase III clinical trials found that it was well tolerated and effective when used to treat hand and knee osteoarthritis in patients aged 75 years or older. 1
  • Rheumatoid arthritis – Topical Diclofenac Sodium 1.5% provides some relief for pain caused by rheumatoid arthritis, but it’s typically used in combination with systemic agents.
  • Neuropathic pain – A small, randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blinded, crossover clinical trial explored the efficacy of topical Diclofenac 1.5% on patients with postherpetic neuralgia and complex regional pain syndrome. Based on a visual pain scale—and corroborated by quantitative sensory testing—subjects using topical Diclofenac had lower overall pain scores. 2
